"As far back as the 1920’s, the Akron area was known as a restaurant town. The heyday was in the 1950’s and 60’s. The restaurant scene was booming in the 1940’s despite food rationing and labor shortages because of World War II. In 1951, Kenny Nichols, Akron Beacon Journal columnist, said that it would be possible to feed 30,000 people at one time in Akron restaurants.
The golden age continued into the 1960’s, but casual restaurants were coming into their own with dozens of fast-food restaurants and more and more drive-in restaurants. Restaurant food declined in quality as owners embraced the convenience-food trend.
